A Parable For Our Time (Pharisee and Tax Collector)

Luke 18:10-14

Two men went downtown to the Cathedral to pray, one a US Roman Catholic Bishop and the other an oil company executive. The Bishop, kneeling by himself, was praying in this way, ‘God I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this oil company executive. I pray the rosary daily and confess my sins twice a week.’ But the oil company executive, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was weeping and saying, ‘God be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you this man went back to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.
